The IELTS is an internationally recognized English language proficiency test designed for non-native English speakers. It is widely used for education, work, and immigration purposes in countries where English is the main language of communication.


Types of IELTS

There are two main versions of the IELTS test:

1. IELTS Academic

  • Designed for those applying for higher education or professional registration.
  • Focuses on academic language and tests readiness to study or train in an English-speaking environment.

2. IELTS General Training

  • Suitable for those migrating to English-speaking countries (e.g., Australia, Canada, UK).
  • Also used for work experience or training programs.
  • Emphasizes everyday English language skills.

IELTS Test Format

The test consists of four sections:

1. Listening

  • Duration: ~30 minutes
  • Four recordings of native English speakers
  • Tests understanding of main ideas, specific information, opinions, etc.

2. Reading

  • Duration: 60 minutes
  • Academic or General Training reading passages
  • Includes tasks like multiple choice, matching headings, and more

3. Writing

  • Duration: 60 minutes
  • Two tasks:
    • Task 1: Describe visual information (Academic) or write a letter (General Training)
    • Task 2: Essay writing based on an argument or opinion

4. Speaking

  • Duration: 11–14 minutes
  • Face-to-face interview with an examiner
  • Consists of introduction, short speech, and discussion

Scoring System

  • Band score ranges from 1 (Non-user) to 9 (Expert user)
  • Each section is scored individually, and an overall band score is given
